Swedish populist politics in May 2026

tidöshit

Look at the image of comedian Kathryn Leroux and the party leaders of the christian democrats and the moderates. By the way, there's nothing christian about the christian democrats, and because the moderates are now deeply liaised with the sweden democrats (xenophobes), their politlcal-party names are misnomers in the extreme. Also, there's no way that Ulf Kristersson can drive a bus, so this image is actually a perfect metaphor for his and Busch's party politics.

Come September, it's time for the Swedish general election.

I've written about Swedish popular politics before:

These are just a few of my posts. What I see is simple: the so-called Tidö parties—the ones that either are extreme-right-wing or support extreme-right-wing parties—try anything to stay in power. This behaviour is not ideological: it is to keep and seize power, very much like Ben Riley-Smith describes in his book about the Conservatory party in England; I've written about the matter in this section of a prior post.

What's interesting to me about the current state of Swedish politics is that Liberalerna and Kristdemokraterna (the liberals and the christian democrats, respectively) are on the cusp of not getting enough votes to remain in government. As such, they flail; they quickly made friends with Sverigedemokraterna, which is a deeply xenophobic and islamophobic political party.

This graph shows the division of the main two genders on the list for each political party that's currently in parliament. Women are dark purple and men are light purple.

The gist: the more right-wing a party is, the fewer women vote for it. Hell yeah.

This also shows in voter data. In April 2026, Swedish state-run TV showed that 64% of all women voters would vote for a red-green coalition (this basically means anything but the Tidö parties).

The simpler the solution that's offered, the more shady the party. Six months of cheaper traffic? How about Ulf Kristersson, the prime minister, stops making lobbyist money by feeding his investments in private-school mayhem? How about Ebba Busch stops lying?
