BrooklynVegan, an interesting and important music news site, was a few days ago the victim of mass firings by its owner, Veeps¹.

Veeps was founded by Good Charlotte’s Benji and Joel Madden and has operated for many years as a ticketed livestream platform. Publicist Jacob Daneman mourned BrooklynVegan on X last night: “RIP Brooklyn Vegan. Absolutely bewildering. Thinking of all the great people there and the unparalleled music coverage they’ve done over the years. Utterly unceremonious and moronic actions by Veeps.”²

The company Live Nation does not care about music nor about makers of music. I'll write something about them and put it in my garden³, but for now, let's just say they're nefarious capitalists.

Thankfully, alternative publications still exist. Here's a list of some that I've found and enjoy.

The Quietus

The Quietus have existed since long. I enjoy their reviews and interviews. For me, theirs is the best music-review site and newsletter. I cherish their 'Baker's Dozen' section where artists list their favourite albums.

Some of the music reviews are very thought-through and provokative in a good sense, not as in trying-to-be-cool.

Bleep's newsletter

I really like the Bleep newsletter. Arrives every Friday and alerts me about new music. Eye-opening. The music is mainly focused on electronic music but it's a little more diverse than so, including, for example, dub, indie rock, punk, and noise.

I've found a lot of great ambient, experimental, and odd hip-hop through this site.

Record Club

Record Club is a social music site where you can keep track of what you listen to, create lists, recommend music to people to whom you're connected, and review stuff.

One of the features for which I love Record Club the most is the ability to get updates when your favourite artists release new stuff. It's great.

Also, Mattias, the lead developer of Record Club, is a grand person. The site doesn't sell your data.
